My Obsession
For years, I have been obsessed with Alaska. There was a time that I wanted to move there. Something about the entire state just brings to mind thoughts of unspoiled frontier – the kind of place that you can go and be fairly certain that no person has ever set foot there before.
No doubt, I have been preparing myself – both mentally and physically – for a possible trip there. In the near future? Probably not. But someday, I will make it there. And I’m not talking about just hitting the tourist spots that have been “civilized” by the inhabitants. I’m talking about going into the back country and really experiencing what Alaska is.
Something about the Christopher McCandless story has always resonated with me. The urge to find new places, the wandering spirit. Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out well for McCandless, but I think that his story can serve as a lesson for people that want to venture out into the Alaskan wilderness, and return safely.
