Backpacking 101

Quick Tips

There’s a lot to know when you’re starting out backpacking. Here’s a few things that I’ve learned over time… and usually the hard way.

Every Ounce Counts

When you’re packing for your trip, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking “I’d rather be comfortable than have a bad night’s sleep,” or “I’m definitely going to need all of this food!” Part of this comes from experience. My general rule is, if I’m not going to use it, I’m not going to take it (with the exception of emergency gear, first aid, etc.). Only taking what you absolutely need will make your trip much more enjoyable (and your back and legs will thank you).

Know the Trail

Sure, have maps, GPS, whatever works for you. But what are you going to do if those fail? Will you be able to find your way back? Will you know where the closest water source is? Make sure that you know some basics about your trip so that you can find your way out in an emergency.

Spending a Little More Might Pay Off

If you’ve got the money to spend, it’s usually better to buy the higher quality gear. It’s most likely better made, will last longer, be more comfortable, and will just be better in general. However, price doesn’t always equal quality. Read some reviews and do some research before you drop the extra dough.
